Hitachi’s Seaside Park: a Floral Tsunami

The way of commemorating the 2011 Tsunami’s tragedy in Hitachi has nothing to do with the Western monumentality of buliding landmarks that eternally remind us what happened.

Instead of materializing connotations of collective sadness and human pain, the Hitachi Seaside Park celebrates publicly the joy of a multicolour floral landscape. A giant wave made of blue flowers welcomes us.

Their way of overcoming tragedy by overlapping a new layer of optimism to an area devastated by the 2011 Tsunami turns this case into an exceptional example of how to use landscape’s architecture in order to intervene in a positive and active way into this village’s collective mental rcovery.

The Hitachi Seaside Park goes beyond the ‘green image’ to become a complete cultural and emotional landscape on its own right.
